Ramamurthy talks to Indusfood-Tech and gives a brief on the transformational journey of Parksons towards becoming a world class packaging solution provider, and how it plans to tap industry trends going forward. Below are few excerpts from the interview:

Indusfood-Tech: Tell us about the company’s formation and growth story? How have you evolved as a business in India and abroad?
Srikanth Ramamurthy: Parksons Packaging Ltd was formed in 1996 as a part diversification from the existing business to manufacture folding cartons for FMCG, food and healthcare products. From the first carton produced in 1996, the company today produces over 20 million cartons in a day from 6 plants located pan-India.

Parksons combines its technical expertise with market insights to deliver customised solutions that exceed customer expectations. We engage with brand owners early on in the development process to understand their specific needs, and partner with them to create packs that stand out on the shelves and shape consumer experiences.

Indusfood-Tech: What are the key product categories you cater to? And what are the major end use sectors where you are witnessing good demand for your packaging solutions?
SR:  Right from cartons for milk and beverages to litho-laminated cartons, liner cartons to that of clamshell & tray Cartons, we offer a complete range of carton styles complemented by a wide variety of print finishes ranging from foil stamping, embossing, varnishing and a variety of security features. We also supply high-quality Braille cartons for domestic products and also for international markets. Our experts work with the client to ensure that the cartons meet their own quality standards and adhere to the global Braille requirements.

We majorly deal with and find an enormous demand in primary packaging for liquid & dry food products and filling equipment, FMCG and health care domains. The end use sectors that we cater to in the F&B space are fast food, confectionary, bakery products, liquids, tea and powders.

Indusfood-Tech: What are the latest trends in evolution of packaging materials and technology? How are you adapting to them as a company?
SR: Sustainable packaging, which uses renewable and recyclable materials, is the future of packaging industry worldwide. This will soon replace plastics. We are working on customising such materials for wider application other than food products. I think this is exactly where we, as a family at Parksons, are breaking the conventions and differentiating from the clutter.

Indusfood-Tech: How strong has been the role of the R&D for your business to be a success? Any major R&D/innovations that you might wish to share with us?
SR: Application of paper-based packaging material for different liquid food as well as non-food products that traditionally used plastic containers is our new key finding and focus area.

I must mention that besides receiving client recognitions, we have been receiving many awards for excellence in our industry. It is probably because of our clear vision, dedicated staff, industry know-how and expertise gained through consistent R&D, which have made us a number one choice for juries in various award shows.

Indusfood-Tech: How do you ensure adherence to international quality standards at Parksons?
SR: At Parksons, we adhere to the highest standards of quality and continuously invest in the latest technology at all levels of development, from the pre-press stage to the final execution. Headquartered in Mumbai, Parksons has strategically located plants and sales offices across the country, making us one of the only packaging partners with a nationwide reach. With six manufacturing plants in Daman, Chakan (Maharashtra), Pantnagar Unit I & II (Uttarakhand), Sricity (Andhra Pradesh) and Guwahati (Assam), we are able to ensure uninterrupted and quick supplies for our clients located in any part of the country.

We have developed stringent in-process testing and inspection and ensure that we deliver a quality product. With quality policies all documented, we are committed to continuous improvement and perfection. Our ultra-modern QC labs installed at each of our manufacturing units ensure that the quality of carbon is impeccable and most efficient.

Indusfood-Tech: How do you plan to expand your business in the next five years?
SR: By developing and adapting paper-based packaging for most of the food and other products, we wish to penetrate and settle well in the market at a niche position. Worth mentioning, the paper-packaging and also the recyclable sustainable packaging will also penetrate semi-urban and rural markets with increased awareness to reduce single usage of plastic.

Indusfood-Tech: What has been the progress of your business on the export front and which are the main markets you have successfully penetrated? What are your future strategies to tap your potential target markets?
SR: We have made progress in exports to Africa and in Asia. There is a high potential to tap markets in South and Central America as these markets are also looking for adaptation for food products beyond what has been done so far.

Indusfood-Tech: How do you see Indusfood-Tech as a platform for the growth of the industry?
SR: We are coming with the liquid packaging lines in the show and expect that this platform will give us an opportunity to showcase our products with international standards at lower costs and with best of our capabilities to export as well as to serve the Indian markets.
